On Monday 9 May we announced the exciting news that we’re working in Whitby, Ellesmere Port, with a view to establishing the UK’s first Hydrogen Village.

Over the next year we’ll be working closely with people in Whitby to explain more about the programme and show all the benefits of hydrogen as a replacement for natural gas.

Switching to hydrogen will allow people to continue having the convenience and flexibility of gas while reducing their carbon dioxide emissions. Using hydrogen looks and feels the same as using natural gas, and people can continue using similar boilers and gas appliances to the ones they use already.

In order to explain more about the Hydrogen Village programme in Whitby, we’re exploring options to set up a local Hydrogen Experience Centre.

What’s the Hydrogen Experience Centre all about?

This will be a place where local people can come and:

  • speak with the local Hydrogen Village team
  • view hydrogen-ready boilers and other appliances
  • find out more about the benefits of using hydrogen for heating

Marc Clarke, Head of Hydrogen Consumer at Cadent explains:

“We want to be right at the heart of the community in Whitby and making sure everyone’s got access to all the information they need about the Hydrogen Village programme is an important part of that.

“Switching to hydrogen for heating will allow people to continue having the convenience and flexibility of gas while reducing their carbon dioxide emissions.

“Our plans for the new centre will give people the chance to find out exactly what this lower carbon hydrogen future could look like, even if the answer is ‘just like normal’.”
